All--

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) recently
issued a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for proposals to create one
or more consortia of university-community partnerships to address health
issues of concern to the residents of the Gulf States affected by the
Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Gulf oil spill, enhance capacity to respond to
potential future disasters, and to prevent or minimize adverse health
effects arising from them.

The proposed Deepwater Horizon Disaster Research Consortia: Health Impacts
and Community Resiliency seeks proposals that:

   - Investigate health outcomes from exposure to the DWH disaster,
including identification of those at greatest risk for exhibiting adverse
physical, mental and behavioral effects as a consequence of the disaster and
other stressors encountered by residents; and
   - Develop community-based approaches to respond to this and future
disasters, for example, by comparing current strategies to innovative
designs to reduce the impact of disasters on illness in the Gulf Coast
   population.

Each proposed consortia must be focused on:

   - Health outcomes impacted by the DWH disaster; and
   - Community vulnerability and resilience to disasters.

Each application should represent a full partnership between U.S. academic
institution(s) and community-based organization(s). Community organizations
must be located in the Gulf States affected by the DWH disaster. NIH will
provide $5.3 million for three to four awards. An applicant may request a
budget for direct costs of up to $1.2 million for each budget year
requested. The maximum project period is five years.

All institutions are eligible to apply, including universities, state and
local governments, nonprofit organizations, small businesses and for-profit
organizations, and community-based organizations. Given the purpose of this
FOA, it is expected that community partners identified in the application
will reside in affected states (i.e. Louisiana, Florida, Alabama,
Mississippi, and Texas bordering the Gulf of Mexico). NIEHS will host an
informational webinar on December 8th. More information about the webinar
can be found at: www.niehs.nih.gov/gulfresearchconsortia <*

Applications are due to NIH by *January 21, 2011. *The full FOA can be
