The server known an "Laser" is a 10-year older Compaq ProLiant ML530
Server. By contemporary computer standards, this system is quite dated.
Overall, it has served the College well and continues to do so; it has
been very reliable. However, its performance can no longer satisfy all of
requirements we have placed on it, especially in its role as the shared
program repository for the software we use in our teaching labs in the ECC
and EERC.
To relieve the load now on Laser, we are creating a new server which will
host the shared program libraries that are now in the shared filesystem on
Laser known as "Apps" (i.e., \\Laser\Apps). At the close of business
today (Monday), we will begin the process of transitioning all of the
software now shared from \\Laser\Apps to a new server, Apps-1. This will
include all software and license services now hosted on Laser.
The shared folder "Apps" (\\Laser\Apps) will not be available after the
close of business today. The new application folder (\\Apps-1\Apps),
should be available by the start of business on Wednesday. The license
services now on Laser will also be transitioned to Apps-1 as quickly as
time permits. However, this will be done by individual software products,
and additional notices will be distributed for specific changes.
All other functions now on Laser, such as NetStore, will remain unchanged.
