Abstract

An analysis of high-speed images of two-phase flow inside an adiabatic multipli-connected microchannel array was performed. Bubble growth rates, heat flux into bubbles, and observations of void fraction are analyzed and reported. The test section was a silicon micro-array consisting of a series of interconnected 50µm x 50µm channels, and the working fluid was R-11. The chip was heated using a resistive heater, and the flow was observed through a glass upper surface at 5000 fps. Flow rates varied from 6.2 to 24.7 mg/s, and power to the fluid varied from 30 to 780 mW. Heat transfer rates into the bubbles ranged from 0.007 to 9.15 mW with heat flux magnitudes from 0.02 to 6.9 W/cm2. A Fourier transform analysis of void fraction records showed a strong link between the dominant frequency observed in downstream vapor motion and the bubble departure frequency at isolated upstream nucleation sites.
