Recently, several Engineering faculty expressed their concerns about (1)
the faculty retention and (2) the furlough day in the light of the
current and anticipated future budget reduction, in particular, how much
of the inputs from the Faculty Senate survey has been taken into
consideration, http://www.uh.edu/fs/UH_Faculty_Responses.pdf.

Summarizing below comes out of the reports by President Khator and Dr.
Carl Carlucci and the Q&A at yesterday's Faculty Senate meeting.

(1) Faculty retention and recruitment will continue to be the priority
in 2011 with funding identified already. For the list of last year's
retention raise, please see
http://www.uh.edu/fs/FY10_Faculty_Retention_Raises.pdf.

(2) A little bit less than half of the budget cut will come out of the
colleges, of which

        ~ 1/2 from "Staff", e.g., non-teaching staff and overloads/added
compensations.

        ~ 1/4 from "Mandate", e.g., business, travel, allowance, 5%
special items

        ~ 1/8 from "M&O", e.g., facility, marketing, support, software

~ 1/8 from "Faculty", e.g., adjunct and visiting faculty, summer
stipend/overload, course realignment.

(3) Regarding the furlough day, Dr. Carlucci said the idea came out of
the faculty senate survey. A faculty pointed out that the furlough day
is not very high on the faculty survey list. He didn't mind to have the
furlough day as long as the others recommendations in the survey have
been considered. Another faculty suggested that they don't mind to have
more furlough days if they could keep some of the key staff they are
losing.

Joe Charlson and Dmitri Litvinov also attended the meeting. Please
contact any of us if you have more questions about the meeting
yesterday.
