Greetings!

Another great semester at the Cullen College is winding down and I have
a few exciting announcements to share with you.

Student Success: Cullen College students continue to stand out among
their peers. Recently, our students brought home four first-place wins
at state and regional competitions. The IEEE Robotics team, the Concrete
Canoe team and the Chem-E Car team each captured first at their
respective regional competitions. UH engineering students also won the
Texas VEX Robotics Competition. We are extremely proud of these students
and their faculty advisors for representing UH well throughout the
region. The results of these competitions demonstrate the quality
education our students are receiving at the Cullen College.
Congratulations!

CAREER Awards: Stanko Brankovic and Zhu Han, both assistant professors
of electrical and computer engineering, received a National Science
Foundation CAREER Award. This award is one of the most prestigious
honors given to junior faculty. Join me in congratulating Stanko and Zhu
on these well-deserved honors.

ABET Mock Visit: The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology
will be making a mock visit May 2-3. This exercise is important to the
college as we prepare for the accreditation site visit in fall 2011.

Upcoming Events: There are quite a few college events over the next six
weeks. Here's a summary of those activities:

>> Honors Program Roundtable-April 22 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the M.D.
Anderson Library
>> Engineering Leadership Board Meeting-April 30 at the UH
Athletics/Alumni Center
>> ASME/UH Cajun Crawfish Boil-May 2 from 2-5 p.m. at Lynn Eusan Park
>> Spring Faculty/Staff Meeting-May 4 from 3-4:30 p.m. in L2D2
>> Spring Commencement-May 15 at 9 a.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion
>> Dean's Retreat-May 17-18
>> Alumni Awards Gala-June 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Four Seasons

On a separate note, the university is currently mapping out the details
of the mandatory furlough day on May 28 as communicated by Dr. Carlucci
last week. As more information becomes available, we will certainly
communicate with you.

Thank you, all, for your continued support and dedication.

Warm regards,

Joe Tedesco
