CCE Faculty and Staff:
As an FYI, it is my understanding that our College staff will have the
mandated furlough day on May 28, 2010.
Drs. Claydon and Shattuck will be here on May 28 to comply with "campus
offices staying open" on that date. Our college
is withdrawing from participation in New Student Orientation on May 28.
June 1 is the first day of the summer semester
and classes will meet as scheduled.
It is also my understanding that at this time our College will NOT have
voluntary furlough days in June and July as described below.
As more details emerge, information will be shared accordingly.

TO: All UH/UHS-Central Campus Employees
FROM: Dr. Carl Carlucci, Executive Vice President, Administration and
Finance
DATE: April 13, 2010
SUBJECT: University of Houston Furlough Program 2010
As a cost-saving measure necessitated by a statewide budget shortfall
for fiscal year 2010, the University of Houston-Central Campus will
implement a mandatory one-day unpaid furlough program.
We have made every effort to minimize impact on our people and avoid
layoffs. This furlough program is a necessary step to comply with our
budget reduction mandate.
Our full-time and part-time faculty and staff will be required to take
one day of leave without pay during fiscal year 2010 under the Mandatory
Furlough Program. Faculty may select their unpaid furlough day but will
be required to take it no later than May 28, 2010. Staff members will be
required to take either May 28, 2010 or June 1, 2010 as their unpaid
furlough day.
Campus offices will remain open, and classes will not be affected by the
furlough program. Supervisors are responsible for arranging appropriate
staffing, and faculty members are required to take furlough during
non-instructional days. If there is a significant scheduling conflict,
your supervisor will contact Human Resources to discuss re-scheduling
options.
NOTE: Employees with an annualized salary less than $30,000, H-1B Visa
holders and 100 percent grant-sponsored employees are exempt from the
furlough program.
In addition, the university will permit three voluntary furlough days
for colleges and divisions to utilize to further support budget-cut
initiatives within their areas. Voluntary furlough days, which require
departmental approval, must be taken between June 1, 2010 and July 31, 2010.
During these challenging economic times, we must remain fully committed
to the university's initiatives and maintain academic excellence. I
commend our outstanding faculty and dedicated staff for your willingness
to do what it takes to assist the university in minimizing the impact of
our current budget constraints.
