Abstract:
Catalytic partial oxidation reactions play a significant determinative role in the production of upto 25% of all industrial organic chemicals, and CO2 and water are (almost without exception) side products in such processes. In this talk I will discuss how the quantitative analysis of CO2 and water-mediated product inhibition unravels insights into active site requirements and mechanistic features otherwise inaccessible to the experimental kineticist. A reinterpretation of ethane oxidation rate data in light of an understanding of the contrasting nature of inhibitory features arising from these two molecules help address persistent open questions in the field of bulk oxide catalysis. Presented results point to novel strategies for quantifying oxygen non-stoichiometry, as well as more precisely assessing its catalytic function toward oxidation reactions of commercial interest catalyzed by bulk metal oxides.
Bio:
Praveen Bollini obtained his Ph.D. degree from Georgia Tech in 2013 under the advisement of Christopher Jones studying adsorption and diffusion properties of mesoporous materials, and completed a postdoctoral appointment under Aditya Bhan at the University of Minnesota in 2017 investigating the kinetics of complex reaction networks. Since the Fall of 2017 he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Houston, where he leads a research group focused on developing a molecular-level understanding of diffusion, adsorption, and reaction phenomena encountered in nanoporous materials of commercial interest. He is a recipient of the Air Products Fellowship Award, an ACS PRF Doctoral New Investigator Award, and a Scialog Fellowship.
